I wonder why the SciAm chap didn't mention Carl Djerassi who has written some good stuff about scientists and the way they work, their emotional highs and lows, shortcomings and achievements. Djerassi is a scientist, so that helps, and his novels are not inaccessible even in the descriptive science bits, even if sometimes clunky.
