Motivation: trial by fire

Actually, it's more like trial by fire-walking.

On Sunday, Delhi-based Quest Tutorials gave a motivational seminar for 50 ... students [...]. Its climax, a mandatory walk over a six-feet wide firebed of coal heated to 1,100 degrees fahrenheit, ostensibly to remove their inhibitions and fears about writing the exam.

"The students were motivated for four hours in advance and they managed wonderfully. The aim was to make them believe they can walk even on burning coal and need not fear it; similarly, they can crack the IIT-JEE," said Praveen Tyagi, Director, Quest Tutorials.

I read this one in the paper, and you know what? I have attended a lecture by this Khare chap, he does a decent job. But I definitely would not like my nephews doing something like this, and that too for JEE!!

Mridula: You are absolutely right. I too wouldn't want this sort of stuff to happen to anyone. It's a silly way of motivating people. Or, as Hawkeye put it, it just too weird.

I appreciate your concern over the 'Firewalk' as it appears like a dangerous way of motivating people.
However, it is nt at all like the way it appears from a distance.
In fact, firewalking takes just 5% of the entire motivational session. There are numerous other exercises that people go thru.
It is also a well accepted seminar in corporates. Organizations like HCL and Convergys have been doing it for their employees.
It is good fodder for the media which likes to pick up anything that can be sensationalized.
Firewalk as an event has been widely covered in international media, which is not as paranoid about it as our experience of Indian media has been.
Over 300,000 people have done it worldwide overr the last 25 years.
You can search on google to get more information abut firewalk. Wikipedia has a lot of information.

I would be glad to remove any doubts on the issue as it has caused tremendous transformation in the lives of all those who have attended it.
