Boy, that was fast!

Check this out:

... [Apple is] pulling out its software development and support operations in India.

The company had commenced operations in April [to be precise, April 17, 2006] and hired about 30 people for its subsidiary, Apple Services India Pvt Ltd.

Reason?

When contacted, Steve Dowling, an Apple spokesperson, said, "We have re-evaluated our plans and have decided to put our planned support centre growth in other countries."

However, Apple's sales and marketing operations will continue.

This story has also been slashdotted.

After they change the constitution to mandate reservations in the private sector first for SC/STs and then for OBCs, many multinationals (and Indian companies too) will scram from the country faster than you can say "quota".

So guys who resigned their jobs and came to Apple are sacked FOR NO FAULT OF THEIRS

Would they have done this if there had been an Union for IT Professionals.

What is the justification in sacking people without giving ANY NOTICE and giving only 2 months salary when the employees have done nothing wrong.

    Can some one explain this.

Do we need such companies in India.. or let me put it in a different way... Do we need companies that act like this (US Fashion) in India (where the general mindset is entirely different). A job means a lot not only for the income, but also the social status associated with that.

Why can't there be a minimum guarantee or something like this.

You can argue with 100 reasons (agreements, Cost Efficiency etc ) for such behaviour, but what about "Human touch". How can some one explain to his parents (and more importantly to his in-laws !!!!) the reason for him loosing the job when the company is not bankrupt ?!

    Am I too old fashioned

The only people who are going to be benefitted is few Psychiatrists around Bangalore who are going to get a lot of Depression Cases and few Suicidal tendencies perhaps when MNC do like this.

    Dr. Bruno,

    Your sarcasm is getting better.

Human touch is right, wherever in the world the populations were touched by humans, like in most third world socialistic-statist economies, we have upwards of 50% people living below poverty line. In most countries in the west where they managed to avoid the human touch even the poorest can afford a car.

Good luck with your dharnas, slogans etc. It is clearly working.

Whatever, "Dr. Bruno." Tell that to the thousands of hard working Americans here that were sacked with NO 2 month salary package just because some idiot CEO wanted to jump on the "Outsource to India" bandwagon.

NO sympathy for you people at all. Now you know how many of us here feel.

If you don't want the companies there, I'm sure that they would be very happy to fire you all and move elsewhere.

    Sheesh!
Dont hijack the topic of the post to something totally unrelated!!!

And Dr Bruno, to answer your question, no, they wont.

Hmmm, as MadHat put it, the discussion has already gone badly off-topic.

Dr. Bruno: People getting sacked in private industry is not a new thing.

Vin: I too wondered about it, and the ToI story was sketchy. But, via Kaps, we have a link to this story that has just a little bit more info.
This bit from the IWire story is of interest to the discussion here:

Then came the blog blitzkrieg. Apple's Mac and iPod users envisioned poor experiences as a result of the outsourcing of its support centre. They had taken to expressing through blogs, their strong disapproval and disillusionment with the company they felt they all owned because Mac and iPod users constitute a world of their own with a deeply embedded streak of loyalty."

"Apple tried to allay fears of transfer of jobs from the US to India by clarifying that its US call centers would continue to grow and India was as good as any center to offer support services from."

Also, note that the ToI story refers to the Apple's Bangalore Center as for "software development and support operations". IWire, on the other hand, seems to imply that it's basically for customer support.

There is probably more on the slashdot thread as well (I haven't got back to it since I wrote this post).
