I'd like to think that we could laugh at ourselves quite easily. Bangla literature since the late 1800s has produced numerous satyrists. It's only in the last 20 years or so that the humorous spirit has declined a bit.
I would also respectfully add that ancient Indian theater had satyr as a big element. Remnants of Sanskrit theater present even today include chakyarkoothu, which is essentially standup comedy including political satire anticipating Colbert report by millenias.
