Mashelkar's Adventurism

Three links to comments from others; I have nothing to add to whatever I have said here (see also the comments section) and here. [And I'm off to the wonderful Tata Steel City; I'll be able to come back to blogging only after I return Sunday.]

  1. Arunn Narasimhan at Unruled Notebook: Maverick Academic Blogger Rants Off.

  2. Giridhar: Adventurism and Irreverence.

  3. P. Balaram (Director, IISc) in a Current Science editorial: Irreverence and Advancement [pdf].

  1. Balaram's editorial is a unique example of a combo synopsis and paraphrasing, which is longer (and more boring) than the original essay itself! Yawwwwwn .....
One doesn't even want to waste time showing any irreverence towards doddering dinosaurs of science in India.

  2. The few people who matter in Indian science and engineering stay off these articles and endless debates and do something worthwhile with the time thus saved. Ladies and gentlemen, please head back to your labs. Nothing to watch here. Move on, please.

  3. WebMiner: The people who write the above articles (Balaram, Giridhar) matter in Indian science and engineering. You may disagree with their views but do not say they do not do anything worthwhile. Look at their bios before you comment.

  5. @Rajesh: Sorry if you misunderstood. My intention was not to belittle Balaram or Giridhar. I did not even read Balaram's article; I was scared off by sacredfig's comment. I was reacting to Abi's excerpts from Mashelkar's "essay" (which means "attempt" btw). I am amazed: how can a scientist of Mashelkar's reputation waste time writing such low-grade rubbish? And why do Balarams, Giridhars and Abis, who are such good scientists and engineers feel inclined to even take on such nonsense? Isn't 15 minutes spent deconstructing an essay like this 15 minutes lost from technical pursuit, or even fishing or snoozing? There, I have wasted five minutes already. Luckily I don't matter to S&E, not in India, not anywhere.

  6. WebMiner: Thanks for that clarification ;-)
