The Union Cabinet has given its go-ahead to a Bill on foreign educational institutions in India; it will be introduced in the Parliament soon (possibly this Budget Session?). Here's a HT report by Aloke Tikku & Chetan Chauhan:
The Union Cabinet on Thursday approved the bill to regulate foreign education providers but left a window open for the world’s top universities to seek exemptions from government regulations.
A new clause in the bill gives the government powers to exempt foreign institutes from any provision of the legislation, primarily aimed at reining in fly-by-night operators and sub-standard foreign teaching shops. This clause has opened the possibility of exempting these institutes from regulations like reservations, fee structure and salaries.
Thanks to Subrahmanya for the pointer.
