Giridhar has posted some very interesting data on this year's GATE in chemical, civil and electronics engineering, and computer science. One thing that strikes you right away is that the averages (or at least, the medians) are very low indeed. Even at the 75th percentile, for example, the marks have fallen to around 20/100.
Inspired by his post (and with his helpful hints -- thanks Giridhar!), I went and collected some data for the metallurgical engineering (MT) paper that our department (Materials Engineering) draws most of its students from. I have posted a quick (and incomplete) analysis over at Materialia Indica (much like the one I did for JEE-08). Compared to Giridhar's numbers for other disciplines, the average (or, the median) in the MT paper of GATE-09 is far better. it's around 35/100.

GATE sucks. My friend who got disqualified at this years GATE (Civil) got an admit from Georgia Tech for PhD (with RA). Several other friends who are now in US doing grad studies were too lazy to attempt the test: for Mechanical Engg, you ought to study every single subject from your UG course (from thermal to design to OR to PERT/CPM!), while most people going for Grad studies are quite sure of the specialization they care about, and would have forgotten the rest of the subjects almost fully.

Did you do an analysis for Pharmacy? Normally, Pharmacy and Metallurgy have higher cutoff in marks because these papers are easy. I think professors in these branches are lazy :-) Just kidding

I do not understand the reason behind u telling "gate sucks". Your friends might have got Georgia Tech (RA)with a lakh ruppee stipend, but how does that imply GATE sucks??
GATE tests the thorough understanding of the under-grad courses. It is tough. But anything worthwhile cannot be got without hardwork. Even if obtained, it might not last long. Even if it is an admit from MIT or Stanford.
