Some data from Tamil Nadu on the long-term effect of aggressive reservation

Drop everything and head over to Bruno's post where he has given the list of the top 100 ranks in this year's Entrance Exam for Post-Graduate Medical courses in Tamil Nadu. Each entry in the list has the candidate's name, rank, and his/her category -- Open Category, Backward Classes, Most Backward Classes, Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes.

The post itself is in Tamil, but the list is in English. Let me just say that the list is open to many (Rashomonesque) interpretations ;-)

    Abi,

2 FC out of 100 is a good thing?

2 out of 100 is bad, it should have been 5 considering the representation in populations, but its not too bad either.

abi you once again do forget that over 95% of the tn population benefits from reservation.

your myopic and missing the whole picture, twice in 3 posts? crappy analysis, be more careful

//that over 95% of the tn population benefits from reservation.//

    Is it ???

Whether there is 1% reservation or 99% reservation this list is not going to change

by the way about 450 seats every year in MBBS are filled PURELY on Merit ONLY. (which is way ahead than many other states)

I am always confused about how the reservation system works. Let's say there are 100 seats overall and 50% is reserved for certain class of people. Do they rank the candidates irrespective of their class, pick the top 50 and give them admissions, and then pick the top 50 from reserved class and give them admissions? Does this mean if people who are not in the reserved class are not among top 50 don't stand a chance?

    Bruno,

Is it necessary to tag each candidate with the name of their caste group ? You can just cite the numbers (2 FC out of 100, etc) with the same effect. These kinds of things stays around in google for ever. Besides, these candidates obtained seats in the open category without using their caste.

I will post detailed comments on my blog later.

    ROFL!

And what is this supposed to prove? Please provide some background on reservations in TN too starting from what is the % of population covered by reservation. Is there any country, state, city in the world which has reservations for 95% of the population?

    Thanks.

burno, incase you dont know statistics, the sample population (ie those who got into med school) is supposed to be a representation of the actual population. with 95% of the population being under some reserved class, the sample population in merit list too would be a representation of that, ie only 5% will be OC students. It though is less than that. The list doesnt prove anything, more so your reply. ROFTL

Statistics 101. please understand what im trying to say before bullshitting.

@ kvman : There are many ways of implementing the same quantum of reservation

    Few such modes are

    1. Percentage System
    2. Rotation Roster
    3. 100 point roster

There are differences among these methods

    ----
//Let's say there are 100 seats overall and 50% is reserved for certain class of people.//
OK. Assume that 50 % of PG Seats in a college is reserved for Candidates who did UG from that college

//Do they rank the candidates irrespective of their class, pick the top 50 and give them admissions,//
    Yes

//and then pick the top 50 from reserved class and give them admissions?//

Then Pick 50 candidates who have NOT made into the Top 50 in the Open List.

//Does this mean if people who are not in the reserved class are not among top 50 don't stand a chance?//
    Yes....

    ----

Take Ladies Coach in Train. Ladies can get into ladies coach as well as General Coach

Gents Can Get into only General Coach

I have copied the list from www.tnhealth.org

Great Dear. RC has been asking for "data" for quite a long time. If you have this "data", that by reservation, 95% are going to be benefited, please give that to all those "data seekers"

  14. ada-paavi!!!! said...

ah burno in that case, assuming my statement of 95% being under reservation is true my argument is right.

Let me help you arrive at the data. Total Population of TN - Sum of the Total population of the castes who dont benefit from reservation.

By this method I claim that 95% of the population of TN is under reservation. IF you disagree the onus is on you to produce the data.

I agree with you. But can you please tell this loud and clear to all those who said that to implement OBC reservation they need "data"

You are giving data that 95% of Population needs reservation. Excellent

There were few who doubted that OBCs do not even constitute 27 % of population.

If you are very confident of your "data", I am the happiest person

  16. ada-paavi!!!! said...

burno if you do agree that 95% comes under the reservation umbrella, then it by itself is stupid to have reservation :-) and this goes on to add that the BC status has been sold by politicians to gain votes.

which is self defeating since those who need to benefit from reservation dont.

In your list, rather than BC/MBC wise, do a caste wise study (right down to caste names) you will notice those who benefit are those who are already advantaged. that is RCs point incase you dont get it. This of course defeats the purpose of reservation.

My numbers are not against reservation per say, but against the current structure of them being implemented in TN.
