I have been following scholarly shenanigans -- mostly research misconduct: plagiarism, falsification, fabrication -- fairly extensively on this blog; occasionally, I have also linked to stories about professors who have been assholes. But, I have to admit that this is a new low:
A professor of law at Leibniz University, in Hannover, Germany, has been sentenced to three years in jail for taking bribes from students he accepted as doctoral candidates, the German news agency Deutsche Welle reported.
"Explaining his motive, the professor said that his salary of around 5,000 euros ($7,850) was insufficient to cover his debts."
ReplyDeleteI think I know another country where prof's salaries are obscenely low :). But there, the lack is mostly made-up-for by getting the PhD student to buy milk and sabzi on a daily basis :).
Giving unsuitable kids admissions, or destroying lives of smart ones, which poison should one choose? I wonder.
Summary of rant -- unless something is done to fix the pay-structure, these things will keep happening, no matter which country.
