Language Log has many posts on the myth about Eskimo words for snow. You can see them here
The Eskimo story is pretty strange, though I will take a detailed look later. I would think that this is a commonly accepted fact; that your vocabulary is strongly dictated by your environment. We have so many words for shades of colour, so why don't eskimos have many words for forms of snow?
