The second article says that the first major attack on Poincare conjecture was by Alfred Whitehead. It was by J.H.C. Whitehead a nephiew of Alfred North Whilehead. A.N. W. and Russell colloborated on Prinipia Mathematica. J.H.C. was born in Madras and after his first failed attempt did a lot of work on the foundations of Combinatorial Topology some of which were used in Stallings' proof in the higher dimensional case.
