Growing in coastal Andhra villages, I watched several Hindi and Tamil movies in the forties and fifties. Cinema was great leveler. It brought various types of music and ideas to common people without specialized knowledge; they had to appeal to common people to make money. Many film people had egalitarian ideals and sometimes sneaked in some of their ideas.I think Salil Chowdary came from leftist background but not knowing the languages I am not sure how many of his songs were explicitly idealistic like some from N.S. Krishnan.
