I also thought Penrose (who brought aperiodic tilings to the mathematics/physics world independently, although Islamic architecture had used these motifs many centuries ago) and Mackay (who first computed the diffraction patterns of such tilings as well as suggested that they could be obtained physically - in a sense 'predicting' them ) would have been good joint choices. Of course, theory-wise there would have been several contenders, among them Kramer and Neri, Steinhardt and Levine.Gautam Menonhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/13380130705745922128noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-9818962.post-16957218932345758942011-10-06T06:53:39.969+05:302011-10-06T06:53:39.969+05:30Yes, this is awesome news indeed, especially for m...Yes, this is awesome news indeed, especially for material scientists and metallurgists! I woke up this morning and came to work, only to find everyone super-excited. Soon I found out why - Prof Shechtman had been awarded the Nobel.

Quite some time back, I had attended his course on Transmission Electron Microscopy, and enjoyed it thoroughly. The subject was interesting, the professor was knowledgeable, and just as importantly willing to discuss any problem/questions that the students brought up.

It feels great to know that good things also happen to really nice people.Pratik Rayhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/12991612512085384857noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-9818962.post-38136769697922920242011-10-05T21:08:05.836+05:302011-10-05T21:08:05.836+05:30Data is 'god', interpretations are religio...Data is 'god', interpretations are religions!Devenderhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/00061412974998210484noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-9818962.post-45136661450418225742011-10-05T20:11:01.186+05:302011-10-05T20:11:01.186+05:30truly inspiring and motivating !truly inspiring and motivating !Digbijoy Nathhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/00676969785957849229noreply@blogger.com
