I am not able to understand how assigning...Hi abi,

I am not able to understand how assigning branches in second year will make the rankings more transparent.
One it will be the rankings that will decide which college a person will get. Probably increasing the marks is a much better way.
Second it will be unfair to take away the advantages of raking higher.
Third it will make first year much more growling for students. They need to relook the focus on studies after atleast 2 years of hard work. Its not just the marks that matter, but other activities also matter.

Thanksvivek singlahttps://www.blogger.com/profile/06996691172735959554noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-9818962.post-40707684581149418722009-08-03T21:12:14.707+05:302009-08-03T21:12:14.707+05:30@Cipher: I'm glad you are satisfied with the r...@Cipher: I'm glad you are satisfied with the results of our reservation policy ... ;-)

@Niket: I agree that ranking a large number of students (nearly 10000) using just 480 marks is impossible without serious overlap at each mark. BTW, in my post, the passage you quoted appears only as an observation; I don't wish to attach a value judgment to it.

However, I really have to wonder why each question should carry the same weight irrespective of its difficulty level. I have always suspected that if the JEE's ranking procedure is put through even a low level statistical test, the results would be appalling; for example, the 'validity' of any JEE rank beyond 1000 (say) would be highly questionable.

One way out, as you suggest (and as I and others have suggested), would be to admit students into IITs without assigning a branch. It would be wonderful if the IITs were to implement this scheme.Abihttps://www.blogger.com/profile/06790560045313883673noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-9818962.post-11482508959289317832009-08-02T09:51:53.300+05:302009-08-02T09:51:53.300+05:30"At the 1000th rank, a difference of 1 mark (..."At the 1000th rank, a difference of 1 mark (out of 480) could set a student back by 30 ranks. At ranks 5000+, each mark is worth as many as 125 ranks!"

Abi, any scheme that tries to rank 3+ lakh students and choose 5000 out of them is bound to have such problems. You can't fault JEE for this.

A better way, IMHO, is to not allot any branch in the first year, since the first year courses are common anyway. The branch is allotted at the end of their second semester.

The problem with this may be that we'll have a new industry of coaching classes dedicated to first year IIT curriculum. We may just shift the problem elsewhere!Nikethttps://www.blogger.com/profile/14882163077938014472noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-9818962.post-63575475162104464622009-08-02T04:50:32.426+05:302009-08-02T04:50:32.426+05:30So when everything is settled roughly a 5 percent ...So when everything is settled roughly a 5 percent increase for OBCs effectively and an approximate 7 percent increase for general. Not a bad deal.cipherhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/15049448088189884477noreply@blogger.com
